Migration Strategy And Divergent Sexual Selection On Bird Song

July 12, 2017

Although all bird song has two functions, to attract a mate and repel rivals, the relative importance of these functions may vary between populations.

We found in that migratory birds attracting a mate is most important function of song, while in resident populations it is more important to repel rivals. In both cases song characteristics reflect the main function.

As species alter their migration behaviour in response to climate change the main function of their song will also be affected.

Whether populations can adapt to these changes will depend on whether the song in that species can adapt to the new requirements.
